Tomato Awards Luncheon

Mid-Atlantic Fruit and Vegetable Convention

Each year at the Mid-Atlantic Fruit and Vegetable Convention held in Hershey, Furmano Foods recognizes some of our growers as “Tomato Champions”. The growers are judged against the other growers in the same acreage categories, with the criteria of tons per acre, average cull grade, and AB grade (which denotes peeler characteristics) being compared.

On February 2, the following growers were honored at the Tomato Awards Luncheon at the convention:

* Aaron Hawbaker from Waynesboro, Franklin County, PA.
* Pepper Ridge Farms/Ken Yoder from Sudlersville, Queen Anne County, MD.
* Singing Maple Farm/Dale and Lamar Stoner from Lancaster, Lancaster County, PA.
* Hidden Acres/ Kevin Rohrer from Manheim, Lancaster County, PA.
* Cedar Meadow Farm/Steve Groff.
In addition to honoring growers each year, Furmano Foods also recognizes someone for their support of the tomato industry. This person, either from associated industries, university staff, government agencies, or other supporting organizations, is honored at the luncheon for their contribution to the tomato industry. This year, Dr. Peter Ferretti, Professor of Vegetable Crops in the Horticulture Department at Penn State University was honored. Dr. Ferretti has been on the Horticulture Faculty at Penn State for 35 years, being involved in extension work as well as applied research with not only tomatoes, but many other vegetables also. Working to promote vegetables for better health, Dr. Ferretti has served on PA Department of Health’s 5-A-Day Committee and also with the Produce for Better Health Foundation. Furmano Foods congratulates all those honored at the recent Tomato Awards luncheon
