Furmano's Canned Tomatoes Are Safe
June 12, 2008 - Northumberland, PA - As you may be aware, the Food and Drug Administration is alerting consumers nationwide that "a salmonellosis outbreak appears to be linked to consumption of certain types of raw red tomatoes and products containing raw red tomatoes." Please note that this alert is for raw tomatoes. The tomatoes that Furmano Foods packs go through a cooking process that inactivates Salmonella, if present. The temperatures reached in the cooking process easily exceed the minimum temperature required to inactivate Salmonella; therefore, canned tomatoes are safe to consume. In addition, the states where we grow and harvest our tomatoes have not been associated with the outbreak and have been deemed safe to consume by the FDA.
