PRESS RELEASE

FURMANO'S TOMATO CROP UPDATE

JULY 20, 2009

For immediate release, Northumberland, PA -- Furmano's tomato crop continues to do well in spite of the "Late Blight" threat in the Northeast.  "Late Blight" is the same fungus that caused the potato famine in Ireland in the 1840's.  Fortunately, in this century, we have options for crop protection materials that help us combat the disease.  "Late Blight" damages the leaves and stems of the plants. It can spread by spores rapidly and is invasive.  The disease does not affect the red fruit and cannot last over winter, so next year's crop will not be affected by this year's blight.

When Furmano's Field Manager, Ken Martin, was asked about the "Late Blight" and what they have done to prevent crop damage, Ken said "We have some areas of localized infection. These areas were caught early.  We have increased our field scouting and increased application of crop protection materials."  Ken added, "The cost of the tomato crop is higher but it gives us assurances that, as of today, we don't anticipate any crop loss."

Furmano's says they will continue to monitor the crop closely and take action to ensure that the crop is protected.  Furmano's has Extension personnel from Penn State that provide weekly updates to ensure they have the best information. Furmano's has been farming tomatoes over 88 years and hasn't lost a crop yet to "Late Blight."
