Raising of the Flag on the Evaporator Commemorating Start of Furmano's 88th Tomato Season - August 12, 2008

For Immediate Release - Northumberland, PA -- Furmano's begins its 88th Tomato Season with a flag raising ceremony and prayer time. Now in its 4th generation of growing, harvesting and packaging tomatoes, Furmano's celebrates its history and looks to the future.

Although an American Flag always flies in front of our plant, we gather at the beginning of each tomato season for a special flag raising ceremony. We gather on top of our evaporator, the highest point outdoors of our operation which overlooks the production facility, the tomato receiving yard, and some of the nearby farms. From this vantage point, we pause to celebrate, reflect, intercede and offer thanksgiving.

Following a tradition set by each of the preceding years, we celebrate the accomplishments made in preparation for the upcoming tomato season. The maintenance team works hard to implement new capital projects and make other improvements which allow us to process our pack more effectively, more safely, and more efficiently.

We also pause to reflect upon our fellow workers, some current and some retired, who have passed away in the past year. In a time of prayer, we intercede for our fellow workers who are currently fighting health issues, ask for safety for those traveling, for those working in the fields to bring in the harvest, and for those processing the crop in the plant. We ask for the Lord’s continued blessing to be upon this year’s crop and we ask for our own faithfulness in being good stewards not only of the crop we are about to receive, but also of this company and its position in being able to serve and nourish others.

Finally, we close our prayer in thanksgiving for all the above things, knowing that all we accomplish and all that we have is made possible and comes from the hand of the Lord, our Creator. Following our celebration and prayer time, we raise an American flag which can then fly over top of our plant throughout tomato season and join in the Pledge of Allegiance.
